The Do's and Don'ts of Offsets

At Carbon zero, we recognize the grandness of humanity's fight against climate change. We firmly believe that progress will only be achieved as a collective effort. We are aware that knowledge on carbon solutions is scarce and incomprehensive. So, we bring the solutions to you - we make it easier for you to do your part in fighting climate change.

Driving carbon neutral change.

Problems with Carbon Offsets

Carbon offsets greenwash dirty business practices

Prominent corporations, whose core operations historically contribute to the release of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, have increasingly turned to the practice of carbon offsets as a means to obscure the genuine environmental repercussions of their actions. This emerging trend represents a concerning manifestation of what is commonly referred to as "greenwashing," marking the latest installment in a disheartening history of environmentally detrimental businesses deceiving their customer base.

Greenwashing is akin to the contemporary equivalent of tobacco companies asserting that smoking is beneficial for one's health. In hindsight, society was able to discern the falsehoods propagated by the tobacco industry, leading to a collective understanding of the dangers of smoking. Similarly, the time has come for us to disentangle ourselves from the entwining grip of fossil fuels as expeditiously as possible.

While it is laudable for any organization to invest in climate solutions, it is imperative that fossil fuel companies and other major emitters are not absolved of their environmental responsibilities merely by purchasing carbon offsets. To address the urgent climate crisis, every enterprise within the oil and gas sector must either transition to an entirely different operational paradigm or cease their activities altogether. Carbon offsets, in the long term, are not a sustainable solution for these companies to continue their polluting practices. However, misleading consumers is only one facet of the problem associated with carbon offsets—unfortunately, the majority of carbon offset projects fail to generate a substantive impact on mitigating climate change in the first place.

Our shared responsibility, as conscientious consumers and stakeholders in the battle against climate change, is to hold these corporations accountable for their actions and advocate for meaningful, sustainable strategies that genuinely reduce their environmental footprint. Together, we can work towards a future that is cleaner, greener, and free from the deception of greenwashing.

Carbon offsets don't have the impact they promise

In our quest to achieve carbon neutrality, we are confronted with several challenges and concerns that demand our attention and dedication. It is imperative to address these issues and bring transparency to the world of carbon offset projects.

One critical issue is the destructive impact of wildfires on offset projects in regions like Oregon and California. These devastating fires not only pose a direct threat to the environment but also disrupt carbon offset initiatives. We must find innovative solutions to mitigate these challenges and protect the integrity of these vital projects.

Furthermore, the rise of massive Chinese hydroelectricity projects selling carbon offsets for profit has raised eyebrows in the industry. While it's essential to support sustainable initiatives, it's equally important to ensure that the core focus remains on carbon neutrality and environmental well-being rather than profit margins.

Perhaps most concerning is the estimation that up to 85% of carbon offset projects fail to deliver the impact they promise. This discrepancy between intent and outcome emphasizes the urgency of reevaluating and reforming the industry.

Diversity within the carbon offset industry is a double-edged sword. While it offers a wide array of project types, differing in terms of geography, technology, size, and operational practices, this diversity can also conceal fraudulent activities. To truly discern the effectiveness of these projects, transparency is essential. Without a clear view of their inner workings, it becomes challenging to separate the truly impactful projects from those that fall short of their promises.

In our mission to achieve carbon neutrality, we must address these challenges head-on. By promoting transparency, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to environmental responsibility, we can navigate these hurdles and drive forward the cause of carbon neutrality with renewed vigor. Together, we can make a real and lasting impact on our planet.

The Positives of Carbon Offsets

The flip side

At Carbon, we swiftly recognized the pivotal role that transparency plays in the realm of identifying truly impactful projects amidst a plethora of less commendable ones. We are strong in our commitment to comprehensively comprehend the scientific underpinnings and financial intricacies of each project before we pledge our support. Furthermore, we insist on receiving regular updates regarding the inner workings of every project we choose to back, thereby ensuring that the funds contributed by our esteemed members yield the desired positive impact.

In an industry often shrouded in obscurity, the call for transparency emerges as a pioneering and transformative demand. It is not uncommon for many carbon offset projects to exhibit discomfort when confronted with probing inquiries. Prospective partners frequently find themselves taken aback by the level of detail we seek concerning their financial operations.

However, for those partners who align with our unwavering commitment to transparency, our approach is nothing short of refreshing. They willingly divulge all pertinent information, facilitate meetings with their team, and even craft engaging video updates for our esteemed members. By spotlighting these exceptional carbon offset projects, we endeavor to steer clear of the industry's opacity, directing financial resources towards endeavors that matter most in the fight against carbon emissions.

Maintaining such a high level of transparency is an arduous endeavor, but it is one we deem invaluable. The transparency we share with our partners stands as the sole assurance of the impact our members' contributions bring forth. If a prospective partner is unable to meet our transparency standards, regrettably, collaboration becomes untenable.

To ensure the maintenance of transparency and to guarantee the judicious selection of partners, Carbon has established a rigorous research process. Below, we elucidate the steps involved in this vital undertaking:
